Aston Villa vs West Ham Prediction & Match Preview
Monday, September 16 – 15:00 EST – Villa Park
The good news for Villa is that they have been relatively sound defensively excluding their opening defeat to Tottenham. They have managed to concede a decent six goals in four games. By Premier League standards this is quite impressive for a club sitting at 18th place. It has not always been smooth sailing for captain Jack Grealish, however he remains the obvious goal threat for this Villa side. New signing Wesley has also impressed and he bagged his first goal in a 2-0 win against Everton. Furthermore, he is definitely one of if not the strongest striker in the league this season. He has the ability to outmuscle any defender. The key will be providing him with service in matches where Villa do not necessarily hold a ton of possession. Perhaps their greatest strength resides with their centre back partnership. Tyrone Mings and Björn Engels have formed a wonderful understanding.
After a humbling but ultimately expected 5-0 defeat to Manchester City on the opening day, West Ham have found their groove. Their most impressive result has been a 3-1 away victory to Watford. Manuel Pellegrini has made the most of new signing Sébastien Haller. Haller is their top scorer with a total of three goals. Credit must also be given to the men behind him providing service. Manuel Lanzini, Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko play in an attacking midfield three behind Haller. Their performances have been outstanding. Unfortunately, this leaves other new recruit Pablo Fornals as the odd man out. Ultimately competition will be a great thing for this squad. When players with Fornals’ quality are on the bench eager to push for a start it motivates the whole team to up their performances.
