Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg Prediction & Match Preview

Saturday, August 17 – 9:30 EST – Signal Iduna Park

Dortmund finished the prior season only 2 points behind eventual winners Bayern Munich. They are hoping to improve and win the Bundesliga outright. Lucien Favre will be the man in charge for a second consecutive season. Dortmund’s squad has changed drastically. Many of last season’s regulars such as Christian Pulisic, Abdou Diallo and Maximilian Philipp have departed the club. The good news is Dortmund did not hesitate to strengthen the squad in light of these departures. Wingers Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard will provide a much needed offensive boost to the club’s dynamic. Defensively, Dortmund are reunited with club legend Mats Hummels. Furthermore, they have signed German international left-back Nico Schulz. Look for these signings poached from fellow Bundesliga clubs to settle in immediately and provide a boost to their already dangerous arsenal of weapons.

Augsburg will find it difficult to compete on level footing when they face this Dortmund team on the road. They barely managed to finish atop the relegation zone during last year’s campaign. Since their debut in the top flight in 2011, they finished between 12-15 during six of their eight seasons. Their goal is simply to remain in the top division and avoid relegation. The club managed to sell defender Martin Hinteregger for a respectable 12 million euros. They took this sum and reinvested it into the squad. Augsburg went with quantity over quality, purchasing several players around the 3-5 million euro region. Hopefully for Augsburg fans they found a few diamonds in the rough. Best case scenario for the club is a season where Augsburg overachieves and not worry about relegation.
