This is Cagliari’s fourth consecutive season in Serie A after winning the Serie B title back in 2016. Their best finish since rejoining the top flight was eleventh place in 2017. Since then they have had back to back fifteenth place finishes. Nonetheless, their goal this season is to improve on that fifteen by a few places and more importantly avoid relegation at all costs. They received a large fee from the sale of young prodigy Nicolo Barella. Cagliari decided to reinvest this sum into the squad. Many Serie A organizations would have kept the sizeable profit. Cagliari brought in Juventus academy product Alberto Cerri. Cerri is a young talent with an eye for the back of the net. Furthermore, they acquired 23 year old midfielder Nahitan Nàndez from Boca Juniors. Much is expected of Nàndez, it is not everyday Cagliari spend upward of 20 million euros on a footballer.

Meanwhile, Genoa find themselves in a similar boat. Genoa currently occupy the tenth spot in Serie A. Genoa have established themselves as a mainstay in the Italian league. This is going to be their thirteenth consecutive season. However, it has not always been smooth sailing for this club. Out of those prior twelve seasons, nine of them have seen Genoa finish 10th or below. Ultimately, they are the classic definition of a mid table team and this season looks to be no different. Nonetheless, Genoa are bursting with young talent. On loan striker Andrea Pinamonti and Christian Kouamé have formed a wonderful tandem. Their 3-3 thriller against Roma on the opening day can be viewed as a success for the club.
