La Liga action continues as Leganes vs Atletico Madrid takes place on Sunday. Atletico are looking to step out of Barcelona and Real Madrid’s shadow. They can do so by coasting to a league championship after a few campaigns without one. Leganes dropped their opening fixture at home to promotion team Osasuna. This does not bode well regarding their outlook this season. Leganes vs Atletico will most likely be a comfortable fixture for Diego Simeone’s men.

After numerous years spent in the third and second tier of Spanish football, Leganes have turned out to be a constant in La Liga. This will be their 4th consecutive season. Their placings have not been spectacular. Their finances and previous finishes of 17, 17 and 13 suggest they will be fighting to avoid relegation come season’s end. Mauricio Pellegrino is at the helm for his second season. After achieving their best placing last season he will be looking to break into the top 10. This will be rather difficult considering the lack of investment into the squad. Veteran centre forward Martin Braithwate will be looking to lead the team offensively. He has performed well in many leagues throughout his career and is a reliable producer of goals. However, this alone may not be enough to achieve success in the highly competitive La Liga.

This is clearly an Atletico Madrid team in transition. They were ultimately very successful during the spells of club legends Godin, Luis and Juanfran. It is truly frightening that this Atletico squad now looks poised to outperform their past iterations. Their transformative period is underway smoothly and they look like a monstrous threat to claim the La Liga title. New signing Kieran Trippier has settled in right away, providing an assist for Morata’s headed goal in his La Liga debut. João Felix is the name on everyone’s lips this season. He is clearly world class at such a young age. Diego Simeone will be the man to develop the young Portuguese forward into the new face of football once the Ronaldo and Messi era is over.
