Ligue 1 action continues on Saturday, August 10, as Marseille vs Stade Reims takes place at the Vélodrome. Marseille secured 61 points last season, earning the club an underwhelming sixth place finish. This is simply not good enough for a club who have won the second most championships in Ligue 1 history. Comparatively, Stade Reims are coming off an extremely successful 2018-2019 campaign. They managed to finish 8th in the league fresh off a promotion during the previous year. At one point, the club were in contention for one of the coveted Europa league spots. They will look to have another strong season and become Ligue 1 regulars.

Marseille vs Stade Reims Prediction & Match Preview

Saturday, August 10 – 11:30 EST – Stade Vélodrome

Marseille are coming into the season with new manager André Villas-Boas at the helm. Villas-Boas has had some decent spells in Russia and China but he has yet to reach the potential attached to his name after a couple of successful seasons at Porto back in 2010. We shall see if the man once hailed as the next Mourinho can prove his doubters wrong and lead Marseille to a Champions League spot. The good news is that Marseille have managed to hold on to their key players. The only significant departure being Mario Balotelli who was rejuvenated last year and bagged an impressive 8 goals in 15 matches. Marseille were conscious of the need to replace those goals and they turned to the market to do just that. One of the few notable arrivals would be that of Argentinian striker Dario Benedetto. The club will be hoping he can replace Balotelli’s goals in the first team.

Stade Reims will find it extremely difficult to replicate last season’s form. Their 8th place finish was spectacular, however they do not have the financial power to sustain that position moving forward. The successful loan spells of young prodigies Sheyi Ojo and Abdul Rahman Baba came to an end and they did not look to replace these departures during the off-season. Not a single euro was spent on an outfield player which will prove to be a monumental problem. Ultimately, this matchup is heavily favouring Marseille. Look for Villas-Boas to make a statement in his debut and earn a victory.
