Philadelphia Phillies vs San Diego Padres (August 18 – 13:05 EST)

Expected Pitchers: Jason Vargas (6-6, ERA: 4.03) vs Joey Lucchesi (6-7, ERA: 4.25)

This is the third game of the series between these two ball clubs. They split the opening two and this is looking to be the decisive match. Philadelphia have a great record of 4-1 in their last 5 home games. They will look to keep the trend going against a San Diego team who has struggled on the road this season. They are 5-10 in their last 15 away games. Philadelphia has gotten the better of San Diego in the head to head matchup this year. They played a total of 5 and Philadelphia have won 3 of those 5. Furthermore, the Phillies find themselves with a lot more to play for as they look to cement their spot as a wild card team. It is looking like the Padres will miss the playoffs again this year. Jason Vargas will be pitching for the fourth time since joining the Phillies. Vargas was fantastic last time out. He held the Cubs to a mere two runs in six innings, resulting in a no-decision in a 4-2 Phillies win. Bryce Harper will look to continue his great run of form in August as the Phillies look poised to take this contest.

Kansas City Royals vs New York Mets (August 18 – 14:15 EST)

Expected Pitchers: Glenn Sparkman (3-8, ERA: 5.32) vs Zack Wheeler (9-7, ERA: 4.36)

New York and Kansas each earned a victory in the series before Sunday’s third game between the ball clubs. The Mets have looked exceptional on the road as of late, picking up wins in 6 out of 10 matches. Meanwhile, the Royals’ home form leaves much to be desired. They are 2-8 in their last 10 home games which is good for last in the AL. The Mets are another team flirting with post season baseball. In a highly competitive National League, they are looking to earn a playoff spot. They get the chance to do so on Sunday against a subpar Royals team. Wheeler has pitched extremely well for the Mets as of late, he will look to make it three wins in as many starts against American League Central teams on Sunday. On the flip side of the pitching matchup, Sparkman is looking to avoid his fourth straight defeat. He will find this task difficult as the Royals have struggled heavily to put runs on the board as of late.
