San Diego Padres vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Friday, September 20 – 22:10 EST – Petco Park

Expected Pitchers: Eric Lauer (8-9, ERA: 4.60) vs Merrill Kelly (11-14, ERA: 4.49)

Lauer did not have the best of outings the last time he pitched Saturday against Colorado. He had a personal three-game winning streak end on Saturday. Lauer gave up six runs in an 11-10 defeat. He has extra incentive to finish the season strong after manager Andy Green had this to say: “He’ll be competing for a rotation spot next year. There are going to be a lot of guys in that mix”. Lauer seems to perform to a higher standard at home in Petco Park. He is 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 13 starts, and he has held opponents to three or fewer runs in 11 of them at Petco Park. Furthermore, the Padres are 0-5 in their last five game 1’s of a series. Their outlook tonight does not look great by any means.

For the Arizona Diamondbacks to claim the second wild card spot, the impossible needs to happen. However, this ball game still has a lot of value. Merrill Kelly gets the start in this one and will look to pitch the same way he did last time out. Kelly is coming off one of his best starts of the year, only allowing three hits and two walks in seven innings while outperforming Anthony DeScalfani in a 1-0 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday. Kelly has not always had a great season, in fact he is one loss away from being one of seven rookies to lose fifteen games in a season. However, he has performed well against the Padres. Kelly has gone 2-1 with a 5.03 ERA in four starts versus the Padres this year. Ultimately, the Diamondbacks will look to ride Kelly’s hot performances.
