Montpellier vs Rennes Prediction & Match Preview
Saturday, August 10 – 14:00 EST – Stade de la Mosson
Former Montpellier defender Michel Der Zakarian has been managing Montpellier since 2017. His tenure could be considered a success in relation to Montpelier ambitions. After miraculously winning the 2011-2012 campaign, Montpellier have been destined to finish mid table every following year. An expected season would see them finish mid table once more. Therefore, a successful season would entail a top 6 finish or higher. Montpellier managed to make some decent income by selling two first team mainstays: Isaac Mbenza and Benjamin Lecomte. Unfortunately, they did not reinvest that money into the squad. They have not completed any noteworthy signings as of yet.
Stade Rennes’ biggest success in some time arrived last season as they won the Coupe de France, beating favourites PSG in the final. However, their 10th place finish was the club’s worst in five years. They will be looking to bounce back and finish in the top 5. Unfortunately for Rennes this will prove difficult. They must cope with two monumental departures on the wings. Electrifying winger Ismaïla Sarr was sold to Watford for a club record return of 27 million euros. Furthermore, Hatem Ben Arfa who enjoyed a successful campaign last season was not given a new contract. It will be tough to cope without these two players, however they did manage to secure winger M’Baye Niang on a permanent deal. That will surely help ease the pain of losing two of their prominent attackers. With some youth coming through the ranks to balance out the squad, Rennes will be looking to start off the season with victory.
