The Houston Rockets host the Portland Trail Blazers at the Toyota Center in our NBA free pick for Wednesday. Portland have fallen out of a playoff spot in recent weeks. This coincides with a 3-7 run during their last ten games. Meanwhile Houston has done enough to stick around the elite pack in the Western Conference. However their performances have been far from convincing. Before we get into our preview for tonight’s match, we would like to remind our readers that our NBA picks are now available for purchase. You can get today’s picks for only $5.

Houston Rockets vs Portland Trail Blazers

Wednesday, January 15 – 21:30 EST – Toyota Center

The Rockets suffered a road loss to the Memphis Grizzlies last night. They return home to face the Trail Blazers tonight on a back to back. The Rockets have gone 6-4 in their last ten games. That is a decent return however this team has larger aspirations than mediocrity. They’re fifth in the standings at the moment. The Rockets are extremely lucky that their average play has coincided with some less than stellar play from the teams around them in the standings. The Clippers and Nuggets are also 6-4 in their last ten. This means the gap from fifth to the top three has not gotten larger but has stayed relatively the same. Despite yesterday’s loss, James Harden managed to score 41 points. Personal achievements are all fine and well however putting up 41 points in a losing effort means very little in the big league.

Portland need to pick it up if they want to partake in a playoff series this season. The Grizzlies are on a six game win streak and have passed many teams in the process. Portland is certainly one of them. They run the risk of this happening again with other teams around their positioning who go on a hot streak. There are essentially seven teams fighting for that eighth and final spot. It is going to be a brutal fight from now until the season ends. Unfortunately it seems as though the eighth spot is the only one up for grabs. The Thunder sit in seventh with 23 wins while the eighth place Grizzlies only have 19. Portland won their latest game against the Hornets and will look to string a couple of wins together. Their leading man Lillard put up 30 points in the win.
