PSV vs Sporting Lisbon Prediction & Match Preview
Thursday, September 19 – 12:55 EST – Philips Stadion
Ajax’s recent dominance domestically and abroad has overshadowed the Eredivisie’s second best team. They have a lot to prove this season seeing as they failed to qualify for Champions League through the qualifying round. They fell to the Europa League by losing to Swiss side Basel on away goals. So far, PSV have done well to move past this disappointment. Their league form is excellent, the Dutch side are 4-1-0 in 5 games. They sit atop the Eredivisie alongside Ajax. Although PSV have lost Hirving Lozano to Napoli, they brought in some quality to strengthen the squad. Promising Japanese winger Ritsu Doan joins the club from Groningen. Furthermore, it seems like they have a new star in their ranks. Academy product Donyell Malen is having a breakout year as a striker. He bagged five goals against Vitesse over the weekend.
One player emphatically comes to mind when discussing Sporting Lisbon. Portuguese attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes is one of the most in form footballers in his position. He is always involved in Lisbon’s success. Fernandes contributes goals and assists, and makes everyone around him a better player. He was pushing for a move away from Lisbon in the offseason. However, it seems that no club was able to meet Lisbon’s asking price. It seems like he has outgrown at the club and another season at Lisbon is likely to be a waste of time. Nonetheless, this club still plays in important competitions such as the Europa League. Lisbon face a tough test against PSV and they will heavily rely on their star man. They have had an average start to the season going 2-2-1 in 5 games. Domestically, it looks like they will fail to challenge Porto and Benfica once more.
