Julian Nagelsmann’s first Bundesliga match in charge of the club was a success. His club won 4-0 on the road to Union Berlin. Of course Berlin are a promotion team and they must temper their excitement for the time being. However, Leipzig have a lot to look forward to. Nagelsmann made a name for himself by achieving great success with a Hoffenheim team who were not expected to perform well. He will look to do the same at Leipzig but on a much larger scale. The financial power, depth and club support are all much greater at Leipzig. They are expected to secure a Champions League spot come season’s end. However, Nagelsamnn will be looking beyond 3rd or 4th place. His ambition with this talented young squad should be to finish ahead of Dortmund and Bayern. It would take a truly miraculous season to do so.

After the departure of key players such as Jovic and Haller, Frankfurt will find it difficult to produce in front of goal. They escaped with a narrow 1-0 victory in their opener. On the bright side they displayed solid defensive quality. Veteran keeper Kevin Trapp permanently joined the club for his second spell during the summer. He will be a mainstay in the starting eleven this year as Frankfurt will look to frustrate teams with their defensive prowess. Other notable signing Martin Hinteregger enjoyed a fruitful debut in which he bagged the lone goal. Frankfurt will find it difficult if they rely on their centre backs to win them 1-0 games all season.
